about

I learned this from Dolores Keane’s fabulous album, Brokenhearted I’ll Wander, whose album art is on my list of top five favorites (as is the actual album). It doesn’t take much jazz knowledge to spot that the piano rhythm is a squared up version of Take 5.

lyrics

I once had a sweetheart but now I have none
He's gone and he's left me I'm here all alone
And now that he's left me content I must be
For he loves another far better than me

Green grow the laurels and soft falls the dew
Sad was my heart when I parted from you
With our next meeting I hope you'll prove true
Never change the green laurel for the red, white, and blue

I wrote him a letter so loving and kind
He wrote me another with sharp bitter lines
Saying "Keep your love letters and I will keep mine."
"You write to your love and I'll write to mine"

He passed by my window both early and late,
And the looks that he gave me would make your heart ache,
The looks that he gave me ten thousand would kill,
Wherever he wanders, he'll be my love still.

Nevertheless, that is where she has found herself today. Armed with her father’s guitar, her fiddle and her voice, Baker writes and performs songs of humorous melancholy that pay tribute to the deep and wide traditions of American music. ... more
