about

This track is a mashup of a tune that I wrote guided by Mark Simos and a poem written by my grandfather, Ward “Pappy” Pafford, whose voice you hear at the beginning of the track. Pappy passed away more than ten years ago and I struggled to figure out who could best represent him in the voiceover. I was absolutely thrilled when Bruce Molsky agreed to step in and while he and Pappy’s accents couldn’t be more different, (from the Bronx to Valdosta!) I hear Pappy’s kindness and wisdom reflected in Bruce’s voice on this beautiful poem.

lyrics

I will tramp the hills, the bottom lands, explore the river's way
Until I take into my hand the life of another day
Dark face that broods beside the flickering fire
Return and speak through carved moods of need and of desire

Return to me the field of corn, the deer's long leap, the hawk's shrill cry
The implements of thong and horn, the spirit in the wind's low sigh
Establish in my blood and mind the courtesy of love
That guards my search before, behind, for life at far remove

Hannah Rose Baker Boston, Massachusetts

Hannah Rose Baker never thought that she would be a musician, at least, not one who loved country music, played in dive bars, and revered Willie Nelson. Nevertheless, that is where she has found herself today. Armed with her father’s guitar, her fiddle and her voice, Baker writes and performs songs of humorous melancholy that pay tribute to the deep and wide traditions of American music. ... more
